National Poverty Leaders To Attend Sault Forum

SAULT STE. MARIE – Members of the public and members of all faith communities in Sault Algoma are invited to a local poverty series Sault Ste. Marie Without Poverty later this month. This forum series will feature two leading national poverty activists

Staff from Canada Without Poverty and Citizens for Public Justice will be at St. Andrew United Church February 17 and February 18. The forum on February 17 will focus on the reality and economics of poverty. The second forum on February 18 will focus on the faith connection to the issue of acting to overcome poverty.

"Understanding poverty is like assembling a jigsaw puzzle," said Rev. Phil Miller, minister at St. Andrew`s Church at today`s press conference. "You need to look at all the pieces to get the full picture. This forum series offers a chance to look at some of those pieces as they affect our community, province and country".

Sault MP Tony Martin said, "Poverty is a failure of community. For people of faith, there is a moral and ethical imperative to lift ourselves out of our own self interest to care for our neighbour. This is particularly important in these difficult economic times. We are all at risk. "

Rob Rainer (Executive director, Canada Without Poverty) and Chandra Pasma (Public justice policy analyst, Citizens for Public Justice) will also visit community agencies serving those in need. They will also speak at local high schools.

Rexall Robbery Suspect Arrested

A suspect from a robbery at the Second Line Rexall Pharmacy on January 1 2009 was picked up last night by City Police. The suspect, along with another male, was arrested after a vehicle was stopped on Mcnabb Street just before 11 p.m.

Arrested are Rejean Stephen Gionet, 31 of #108-652 Macdonald Avenue, and Andrew Gordon Metatawabin, 21 of 143 Gore Street.

Rejean was charged with robbery as well as possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and possession of a narcotic.

Andrew was charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and possession of a narcotic, as well as three counts of breach of probation.

An undisclosed quantity of cocaine and a knife were found in the stopped vehicle.

Both men are expected in bail court on Monday, January 12 2009.

Update on Chapple Ave Murder Investigation

The post mortem on murder victim Joseph Reed was completed on Wednesday, January 7 in Sudbury.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police are waiting for the coroner’s final report on the specific cause of death.

At this time police believe that a knife was used during the attack and the death was as a result of multiple stab wounds.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is working closely with the crown attorney’s office and continuing the investigation into this homicide.

This is a serious occurrence and the police will not be releasing any further information at this time in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

Murder suspect Keegan M Periard gave local media photographers an obscene finger gesture, and diabolically grinned towards the local media as he was being escorted into the prisoner transport van around noon time, outside the courthouse's crinminal loading dock.

The 20-year-old "badboy" was charged yesterday with the first-degree murder of Joseph Charles Reed, 58, of 101 Chapple Avenue.

Periard was arrested early on Teusday morning at the Greyhound Bus terminal on Brock Street, while probably trying to flee the city.

According to city police, Keegan Perriard and Joseph Charles Reed were not strangers to each other.

In 2001, murder victim Joseph Charles Reed pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault charges involving 3 young boys.

Police Make Arrests In Child Pornography Case

Beginning in October 2008, officers from the Sault Ste Marie Police Services Technological Crime Unit have undertaken a proactive investigation into persons possessing and distributing child pornography.
As a result of this investigation, search warrants were developed for suspects in both Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie.

On Monday January 05, 2009 acting on information from the Sault Ste Marie Technological Crime Unit Officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Service Cyber Crime Unit executed a search warrant on a Sudbury area residence.

On Tuesday January 06, 2009, officers from Sault Ste Marie Police Service Technological Crime Unit, Greater Sudbury Police Service Cyber Crime Unit, and members of the Ontario Provincial Police Child

Sexual Exploitation Section with assistance of the Street Team and the Emergency Services Unit executed 4 separate search warrants within this city several computers and numerous data were seized.

As result of the following three males were arrested:

1) Ronald Byron Vye, age 62 of 606 McNabb Street Apt#1, Sault Ste. Marie
2) Guy Russell Renault, age 55 311 Maretta Street, Sault Ste. Marie
3) Brian Gringel, age 54 of Sudbury

All three have been charged with the following offences:
1) Possession of Child Pornography
2) Make available Child Pornography

Ronald Vye and Guy Renault are to appear in bail court today.

Since this investigation began 7 separate search warrants for the seizure of child pornography have been executed including one in Sudbury.

A total of 5 arrests have been made.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is part of the Ontario Provincial Strategy to Protect Children On-Line from Sexual Exploitation. This project is possible because of a funding grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

High Profile Court Cases In Review

Sault Ste. Marie’s highest profile trial in 2008 — stemming from the death of the first city police officer to lose his life in the line of duty — didn’t take place in the local courthouse.

Jeanette Niganobe’s impaired driving causing death and bodily harm trial was heard in May and June in Sudbury.

The trial was moved to the Nickel City after defence lawyer Eric McCooeye successfully argued for a change of venue.

Crown attorney Glen Wasyliniuk and assistant Crown attorney Kelly Weeks prosecuted the case, which a jury heard for 14 days over a number of weeks.

Const. Donald Doucet was killed May 14, 2006 after Niganobe’s van smashed into a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service cruiser at the intersection of Black Road and McNabb Street.

A second officer, Const. William Freeman, was injured in the crash.

The jury found Niganobe guilty of the impaired driving offences on June 12.

In October, Superior Court Justice Larry Whalen sentenced the Mississauga First Nation woman to five years in prison.

He gave the 32-year-old woman 21 months credit for time she spent in pre-sentence custody and on bail, leaving her with three years and three months to serve.

Niganobe has filed an appeal with the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Doucet, a 12-year-officer, was the first city police officer to die on the job in the service’s then 150-year history.

• More than two years after the bodies of a local woman and her young son were found in the trunk of her car, the man charged in the brutal slayings was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder.

A jury found Albert Ouimet guilty of the charges on Oct. 7, delivering the verdict after about five hours of deliberations at the Sault courthouse.

The following day, Superior Court Justice Frank Caputo imprisoned the 36-year-old man for life with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Police discovered the bodies of Melody Burtis and eight-year-old Harley Baxter Burtis in Greenwood Cemetery on April 20, 2006.

Burtis bled to death from stab wounds that cut through major blood vessels in her neck.

The boy bled to death from a 24-centimetre slash to his throat.

Ouimet admitted killing them, but argued he was so intoxicated from a potent combination of drugs and booze that he was unable to form a specific intent to murder.

KEVIN & TREENA EDWARDS

• Earlier in 2008, a 49-year-old Sault man was imprisoned for inflicting horrendous injuries on his 10-week-old son. Superior Court Justice Gladys Pardu sentenced Kevin Edwards to 12 years in a federal penitentiary in May.

“The cruelty and prolonged brutality were exceptional, ‘’ she said. “This child uffered great pain.’’

A jury found Edwards guilty of aggravated assault, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life in November 2007.

“Baby Kevin” Edwards was taken to hospital on Oct. 26, 2005, suffering from severe head injuries that left him in a near vegetative state.

Jurors heard the baby suffered an acute severe brain injury, caused by a forceful impact.

Edwards, who initially blamed his wife Treena for the injuries, eventually told police he had hit the baby’s head on the floor.

He has filed an appeal in Ontario’s top court.

Treena is scheduled to go to trial in January.

She pleaded guilty in November 2007 to aggravated assault and failing to provided the necessities of life for her son.

However, in May, Pardu struck down the 38-year-old woman’s pleas and ordered a new trial after Treena Edwards denied striking her son during her sentencing hearing.

CLAYTON LAPENSEE

In February, another impaired driver was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for a fatal collision that killed a Sault Ste. Marie woman.

But Clayton Lapensee, 44, is no longer in custody as he waits for the Ontario Court of Appeal to hear his appeal of his conviction.

Anita Proulx succumbed to head injuries on Jan. 3, 2006, six weeks after the November 2005 collision, which occurred on Second Line West near Korah Road.

Her daughter Amanda, who was a passenger in the family’s minivan, was injured in the four-vehicle collision.
